Cet album a été pensé dès le départ en deux parties bien distinctes. La première est résolument ancrée dans mon humeur de ces deux dernières années : elle contient les morceaux les plus gais et optimistes que j'ai jamais écrits. J'ai tenté de varier plus souvent que d'habitude les ambiances et les instrumentations. C'est l'illustration la plus évidente du soleil qui donne son titre à l'album.

La seconde partie fait référence à des moments plus difficiles et plus sombres que j'ai vécus. La guitare acoustique y est plus présente et l'instrumentation plus proche des précédents albums. C'est l'illustration de l'ombre qui se trouve derrière moi quand je fais face au soleil.

Le concept de l'album m'est venu au cours d'un voyage dans le désert du Hoggar, au cours duquel ont été prises les photos de couverture. Certaines des chansons les plus importantes de l'album à mes yeux ("Burning star", "Blessing light, fading light" notamment) ont également été écrites pendant ces quelques jours de marche au milieu de nulle part. Les autres chansons ont été écrites quelque part en 2008 ou 2009, mis à part "Paper-hearted" qui est une relecture d'une vieille chanson écrite à 18 ans (en 2002).

L'essentiel des enregistrements s'est fait à Paris tout au long de l'année 2009 dans mon salon (transformé pour l'occasion quelques jours par mois en studio d'enregistrement). Au total, plus d'une vingtaine de chansons aurait pu se trouver sur l'album, cela a été un véritable calvaire d'arriver à n'en garder que douze mais l'écoute n'en est que plus fluide et agréable.

Je souhaite remercier Blandine pour ses nombreux apports sur cet album : photos, choeurs (sur "Blessing light, fading light"), idées de chansons et bien d'autres choses. La première partie de l'album lui est dédiée. Quant à la seconde partie, je la dédie à Anne-Claire : bien qu'elle n'ait probablement jamais entendu l'une de mes chansons, je suis sûre qu'elle les écouterait avec son éternel sourire bienveillant.



This album is made of two distinct parts I had in mind from the start. The first one is based on the two former years of my life : it's filled with the most joyful et hopeful songs I've ever written. On these, I tried new sounds and arrangements, in order to sound different and new. This is the most obvious meaning of the album's title, "in the sun".

The second part refers to darker and harder times I've known. There are more guitar-based songs in it, so it sounds more like my previous albums. This part is like the shadow behind me when I'm standing "in the sun".

The idea of this record came to me during a trip in the Hoggar desert (south Algeria). This is when the cover pictures were taken. Some of the most important songs of the album to me, such as "Burning Star" and "Blessing light, fading light" were also written there, between two days of walking in the middle of nowhere. The other songs have been written during the course of 2008 and 2009, except for "Paper-hearted" which dates back from 2002, when I was still a 18 year-old boy.

Most of the recordings have been done in my small living-room in Paris in 2009. At the end of the recording sessions, I had to choose from 20 songs that could have make it on the album. This was a really hard thing to do, but I think it's only for the best : the album is much more enjoyable et easy to listen this way.

I'd like to thank Blandine for her contributions on the album : pictures, backing vocals on "Blessing light, fading light", song ideas and many more. The first part of the album is dedicated to her. Whereas the second part is dedicated to Anne-Claire : although she's probably never heard any of my music, I'm certain she would listen to it with a kind smile on her face.
